Steven Stanten, MD FACS
Dr. Stanten was born and raised in Oakland, California. He graduated from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C. and returned home to complete his internship and residency at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland. He has been practicing in Oakland since he completed his training, starting out with his father who has since retired. He is an accomplished general surgeon, who sees the gamut of general surgical problems, with expertise in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery (minimally-invasive surgery). His brother is a senior cardiothoracic surgeon in the community as well.
Outside of work, Dr. Stanten loves all sports, both as a participant and spectator. He also loves spending time with his wife, three daughters, and grandchildren.

Ajay Upadhyay, MD FACs frcs
Dr. Upadhyay is a general surgeon with more than 39 years of experience. He is a specialist in Hepato-biliary disease and Bariatric Weight loss Surgery. He is highly skilled in Hepato-pancreaticobiliary surgery, Gastric bypass surgery, Vertical sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastrointestinal surgery, robotic and advanced laparoscopy, cancer surgery, and other general surgeries. He is currently the medical director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and the Program Director of the MIS Robotic and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship.
Dr Upadhyay received his Medical Degree from the University Of Delhi, India. Thereafter, he did his Residency Training from New York Hospital Medical Center Queens / Cornell University Medical College. To acquire his Fellowship Training, he went to- University of California San Diego Medical Center.

Rupert Horoupian, MD FACs
Dr. Horoupian was born in Winnipeg and moved to the United States as a young man. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Boston University Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He joined First Surgical Consultants in 2004. He specializes in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, complex hernias and abdominal reconstruction, foregut, hiatal hernia repair, LINX procedure, colorectal surgery, including cancer, diverticular, and prolapse diseases. Dr. Horoupian speaks Armenian and conversational Spanish, in addition to English.
Outside of work, Dr. Horoupian is an avid gardener and cook. He enjoys preparing food with his wife and two daughters. He also enjoys travel, hiking, and hockey.

Rock Liu, MD Facs
Dr. Liu was born in Taiwan and moved to Monterey Park, California when he was 10 years old. He attended The Ohio State University for medical school and completed his residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He completed a fellowship in minimally-invasive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Liu specializes in general surgery with a special focus on complex, minimally-invasive, robotic hernia repairs. He is the only Hernia Epicenter Surgeon in the Bay Area. Surgeons from across the United States, including academic centers, come to observe Dr. Liu perform all variety of robotic hernia repairs – from simple inguinal hernias to complex abdominal wall reconstruction – at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. He is the author of several textbook chapters on the latest advances in robotic hernia surgery. He has been an invited speaker and moderator at multiple surgical conferences around the world. Most importantly, he is one a few surgeons on the West Coast participating in the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC) to ensure long-term quality of his hernia repairs and to contribute data to help surgeons better understand the long-term outcomes of hernia repair. He has created, for patients, a website (www.pacifichernia.com) with evidence-based recommendations and information on hernia treatment.
He is a member of SAGES, ACHQC, and Americas Hernia Society, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is very active in these surgical societies. He is on the Video Based Education Committee at the ACS, the Robotics Committee and Technology Council at SAGES, and the Data Integration Committee at the ACHQC.
Dr. Liu speaks Mandarin in addition to English. Outside of work, Dr. Liu enjoys spending time with his wife, 4 children, dog, and chickens. He enjoys many outdoor activities including mountain biking and snowboarding.

Michael Sung, MD facs
Dr. Sung was born and raised in San Francisco. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and completed his residency at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. He returned to the Bay Area to complete a minimally invasive and bariatric surgery fellowship at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in 2020. He specializes in laparoscopic and robotic general surgery.
Outside of work, Dr. Sung is an avid runner. He also enjoys cooking, hiking and spending time with his family.

Masoud Chopan, Do FACS
Dr. Chopan was born and raised in Oroville, California. He received his Bachelor's degree in neurobiology/physiology & behavior from UC Davis. He attended medical school in Las Vegas, Nevada at Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his General Surgery Residency at Community Memorial Health Systems in Ventura, California where he received many accolades including Resident of the Year and Best Resident Teacher. He is Board Certified and completed an Advanced GI / Minimally Invasive Surgery / Robotics & Bariatric Surgery Fellowship sponsored by First Surgical Consultants. Dr. Chopan is excited to be back in Northern California alongside his wife and son to continue his journey of lifelong learning and to provide quality surgical care for the community.

Johanna Ho, PA-C MPH
Johanna was born and raised in San Francisco. She attended Touro University California in Vallejo, California for her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies and Masters in Public Health. Prior to General Surgery, she practiced in Emergency Medicine. Johanna assists in the operating room, provides perioperative care, and inpatient care.
Outside of work, Johanna enjoys gardening, watching Bay Area sports, camping with the dog, snowboarding with her husband, and eating well with family.
